POLITICAL SUBDIVISION

The seat of the provincial government known as the Government Center is situated in Barangay Patin-ay, Prosperidad. The center also provides a place for national agencies.

There are fourteen municipalities in the province. Seven are located along the Philippines-Japan Friendship Highway or Agusan – Davao National Highway and are aptly termed highway towns. These are Sibagat, Bayugan, Prosperidad, San Francisco, Rosario, Bunawan, and Trento. The municipalities of Sta. Josefa, Veruela, talacogon, San Luis, and Esperanza are situated along the Agusan River. Along the Umayam and Adgawan Rivers which are tributaries of the Agusan River are the municipalities of Loreto and La Paz, repectively. Towns found along the river are called river towns.

Agusan del Sur is composed of 318 barangays. Each barangays is headed by an elected Barangay Captain.

CLASSIFICATION

Agusan del Sur is classified as a first class province. Its sources of income are derived from tax revenues, internal Revenue Allotment, operating and miscellaneous fees and other. Shoe below is the classification by municipality.
