AGUSAN DEL SUR- At least 1,200 families affected by flood waters caused by continuous heavy rain in three barangays in San Luis town benefitted the relief assistance extended by the provincial government.

Mayor Ronald Corvera said the these barangays are: Barangay Poblacion, Barangay Sta. Ines and Barangay Nuevo Trabajo.

Governor Adolph Edward “Eddiebong” Plaza immediately sent relief aids to the victims thru the Provincial Social Welfare Development Office (PSWDO), Barangay and Cultural Community Affairs Unit (BaCCAU) and Provincial Governor’s Office (PGO).

PSWDO Officer-in-Charge Flordeliza Obani said 1,226 packs of relief good that has 5 kilos of rice, noodles, coffee sachets and can goods are given to the flood victims on Tuesday, January 24, 2011.

There were 435 packs given to Barangay Sta. Ines, 365 packs to constituents of Nuevo Trabajo and 400 packs received by the victims in Barangay Poblacion. It was learned that the distribution of relief goods were taken from the 5% of Provincial Calamity Fund.

Obani said that they are identifying the towns here that badly needed help due to flood rains adding that recently they extended help in the municipalities of Rosario, La Paz and Talacogon on the last week of December last year.

She said also that after the relief goods distribution the provincial government will conduct medical outreach program to the affected barangays in San Luis.

Barangay Captain Carmen Migullanes of Poblacion expressed his gratitude to Governor Adolph Edward “Eddiebong” Plaza for urgently sending help to the affected residents of her barangay.

Migullanes cited that some of the victims immediately go to the higher  grounds when the flood water rises while others opted to stay in barangay hall, gymnasium and to their neighbors and relatives houses.

However, Migullanes said few of the victims already went home after observing that the flood water slowly goes down.

On the other hand, Barangay Captain Mila Asarcon in Sta Ines said their agricultural lands were heavily damaged because of the flood water but still she is thankful because no casualty in the residents of her barangay.

I am very happy and thankful to the provincial officials led by Governor Eddiebong for helping the constituents in the barangay,” said Captain Roberto Ceno in Barangay Nuevo Trabajo.

This is not new to the residents as every year they experienced the same thing especially in rainy seasons but, they are worried because they need to stop farming as their main source of living because of the flood water.

Mayor Corvera said though the barangays in his towns experienced this crisis but still he is very thankful for the provincial government mostly to Governor Plaza for the support he is giving to them every time the municipality of San Luis has a problem. ---Melody E. de Vera/ PPIO-AgSur
